MUOS SatCom Planner

MUOS Satellite orbiting over earth

One application for the SATCOM Wireless Network Simulator (WiNS)  is the U.S. Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). WiNS could assist US Military communications planners with the realistic modeling of realistic communications networks and spectral environments.  MUOS is the U.S. military’s next-generation UHF tactical satellite communications system, designed to significantly expand satellite communications for U.S. and Allied mobile forces.  MUOS is part of the general market migration of Satellite Communications from fixed to mobile terminals. The MUOS program is part of the general military initiative to enable SATCOM on the MOVE technologies for the Warfighter.  Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Sunnyvale, CA, prime contractor and systems engineering lead for the MUOS program, is under contract to design, build and deploy the MUOS satellites and associated MUOS ground system. The Navy’s Program Executive Office for Space Systems, Chantilly, Va., and its Communications Satellite Program Office, San Diego, Calif., are responsible for the MUOS program.

Questiny Group Inc.’s WiNS application offers a highly scalable and flexible SATCOM simulation that can model hetergeneous SATCOM networks in a complex and dynamic spectral environment (including blue and red force interference).  Questiny Group Inc. provides a virtualized simulations environment to plan link budgets and optimize operational efficiencies of MUOS satellite systems. Leveraging Questiny Group Inc., military SATCOM planners can proactively plan satellite communication systems hardware for mission plan. By injecting accuracy as well as simplicity in the satellite communications modeling systems, the mission operations planning team can implement efficient responses to possible failures or anomalies in the SATCOM systems prior to the actual combat mission.  Our simulation supports network and resource modeling (RLM) that will indicate the constraints and limitations communications planner may encounter as their mission unfolds. WiNS is designed to be easy to use as well as compact enough to be run on common PC platforms such as laptops and desktops.

As consulting engineering resource in defining MUOS design requirements, Lockheed Martin could not have a better partner than Questiny Group Inc.  Their deep understanding of MUOS system architecture helped us win the contract. – Dr. John Thacker, Chief MUOS Architect, Lockheed Martin Corporation.
